CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF QUILTING IN TAMPA BAY

Margaret Handlin,
Block of the Month Committee Chair

The Block of the Month (BOM) is a great opportunity for both the BOM honoree and all other QWS guild members.  There are many benefits that a QWS guild member has when completing a block for the BOM honoree.
              - Make a block in a pattern that they might not have tried before
              - Opportunity to learn a new technique - one block at a time
              - Work with colors they have not used for themselves
              - Make a block for a fellow QWS guild friend
              - By making blocks, earn enough blocks to become a future BOM honoree
The benefit to the BOM honoree is that once they have done enough blocks for other BOM honorees, over time, usually a year or two, they may also have the opportunity to earn the privilege of being a BOM honoree.  The BOM honoree can choose a pattern and fabrics of their liking and their fellow QWS guild members can make blocks for them, and submit them to the BOM committee chair the following month and receive credit to become a future BOM honoree.  The BOM honoree may then have enough blocks to put together a quilt project of their choosing and all they did was supply the pattern, and maybe a theme fabric.
Some of the blocks that have been chosen more recently are pictured on this web page.  We have had a block done in batiks that looked like a spool of thread.  We have a block using a pattern called the butterfly which was done in black, white, and red; and although the pattern for each block is the same, each block is uniquely different in how the piecer chose to place these three colors in the pattern.  We have had a block that was a scrappy applique flower, done in small floral prints.  We have had a bright sunbonnet sue block with buttonhole stitching done around the edges in black thread.  We have had very cute appliqued cats with each block a different cat caricature such as a clown cat.  We have also had a few paper piecing blocks that were houses and buildings.  So we have quite a great variety in techniques, patterns, fabrics, and themes.
We would like to encourage you to give the Block of the Month a try.  Have a good time, do your best work, share your talents with the BOM honoree, and earn your way to being a future BOM honoree.  Most of all, enjoy yourself and have a great time.  It is a quick, small, and easy way to enjoy your QWS membership.
